Met a madman on the sofa
in the lobby of the hotel
told me he was Edward Snowden
his life a living hell

don’t denounce corruption,
he said, don’t think you’ll live to tell
look at me, I blew the whistle
now life’s a living hell.

he says he lost his wife,
his job,
he says they’re after him
that he has fled to liberal Europe
to escape the Pentagon.

I have no doubt of his conviction
Although I confess, I don’t believe
But, being British, I sit and listen
It wouldn’t do to up and leave.
