the water rises past his knees
he is facing away, eyes upstream
from here I see the weight of his world
held at bay, but only just
I could stay here, on safer ground
in nervous hope he will return
I could cup my hand and call his name
or not; he knows he is not alone
but I can no more wait than leave
his fate is mine, and mine is his.
I wade, the waters bare their teeth
let them; I am all he needs.
