Fiddling while Rome burns
we make love to world events.

so do the news anchors
like sharks, smelling blood.
frenzy upon frenzy, adding kill to kill.

a few ways of looking at it:

we are victims –
needing palliative treatment
a temporary relief
for an incurable ill;

we are care-givers –
and carefully distant
a layer away from contagion,
best interests first;

or we are spectators –
irreparably indifferent.
callous, in our casual witness
making love to world events.
