we don’t know much about him
only, his smile,
and that we must speak loudly.
a surprise for my daughter
who didn’t know ears could age.

his little dog looks like him,
after him
they take each other out
we think three times a day.

he wears flannel trousers
a cap
sometimes his glasses,
following the little dog
once round the building.

I’d like to ask
enunciating clearly –
did you love? do you miss her?
were you tall, fulfilled,
a war veteran, a father?

This afternoon we are making pancakes
We will take him some, still warm
A staple childhood memory.
